.303 B.S.A & Co Sht LE Mk1***
This B.S.A. & Co Sht LE Mk1*** rifle is a very rare survivor as it is complete with its original dated and serial numbered barrel and has matching numbers to all the other parts apart from the bolt that has been renumbered to this rifle. It has been stamped “DP”, this can be done for a variety of reasons and I suspect that in this case it was because the marque had become obsolete. There does not appear to be any damage to either the barrel or action and the rifle has a full set of Birmingham proof marks which means it is perfectly safe to shoot. The barrel is clean and bright with good rifling that gauges at .3035, the fore end shows signs that at some point during its life it was wire rapped for grenade launching, this would also explain the “Ishy” screw that would also been added for extra strength. The overall condition given its age is very good it certainly does not show signs of use in either grenade launching or “Drill Practice”, I suspect the the “DP” markings have saved this little rifle. It retails its full set of volley sights, the windage adjustable rear sight complete with the correct bone inserts and piling swivel but the magazine has been changed for a later marque. Mk 1 rifles in any condition don’t come along very often and to find one that is as complete as this is exceptional, this is probably one for the serious Enfield collector.
